Little Free Library Unveiled at Jennie Elizabeth Hughes Park

On Tuesday, February 9th , the City of West University Place and Girls Scouts of San Jacinto brownie troop 146153 held an unveiling of the new Little Free Library at Jennie Elizabeth Hughes Park, located at 6446 Sewanee. The troop partnered with builder David Crow of Stonehenge Classic Homes, to create a replica of the original home built by Jennie Elizabeth Hughes in 1930. After her son Jim Hughes passed away in 2016, he bequeathed the lifelong property and development funds to the City for the establishment of a quiet park in his mother’s honor.

The Little Free Library initiative was proposed to the City’s Parks and Recreation Department in 2015 by author and resident Chris Cander. The initiative seeks to promote literacy and community through free book exchanges. The new addition at Hughes Park, brings the city’s total number of Little Free Libraries to three. The other two are located at Colonial Park (4130 Byron) and the Scout House (6108 Edloe).

The addition of a Little Free Library is the perfect fit to Hughes Park, allowing residents to enjoy a book in a peaceful setting. Fitting to the project is the phrase the troop selected for the plaque, “It’s Your Story – Tell It!”

The troop will act as stewards of the Little Free Library by making sure the inventory sustains, as well as ensuring that it is maintained properly.

Challenge Course

The Youth Fitness Challenge Course is Now Open!

The City of West University Place is pleased to announce the new Youth Fitness Challenge Course at Colonial Park has opened. The course is designed to meet playground equipment standards for children ages 5-12, and it's the perfect complement to a traditional playground system by promoting physical activity and friendly competition.

In addition, the new solar lighting and solar bollards around the park and walking path have been installed to improve the lighting in the area.

Improvements were funded through the generosity of the Friends of West University Parks Fund. Friends is pleased to announce that Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital is the sponsor for the new course.
