Summary of Board/Commissions Responsibilities

West University Place Board/Commission Membership

Generally, each member of a board or commission shall have a term of office with each term beginning on September 1 of each odd-numbered calendar year and extending through August 31 of the next following odd-numbered calendar year.

Each member appointed shall serve for the specific term or the unexpired portion of the specific position to which the member is appointed. A member shall also serve after the expiration of a term of office until a successor is appointed.

Building and Standards Committee

Responsible for hearing appeals from administrative actions of the Building Official (but not zoning actions), quasi-judicial enforcement of some health and nuisance ordinances, some variances and providing advice on some ordinances.

  • Five regular members (plus alternates)
  • Meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m.

Zoning and Planning Commission

Responsible for advising the City Council on zoning amendments and plans for the physical development of the City and reviewing plats and re-plats.

  • Five to seven members
  • Meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:15 p.m.

Zoning Board of Adjustments

Responsible for hearing appeals from zoning actions of the Building Official, reviewing requests for variances or special exceptions and interpreting the zoning ordinance.

  • Five regular members and four alternate members
  • Meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

Parks and Recreation Board

Responsible for advising the Parks and Recreation Director and the City Council on matters relating to parks and public recreation, making studies and investigations of park facilities and public recreation programs and recommending plans for improvement and performing other duties relating to parks and recreation.

  • Eleven members
  • Meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

Friends of the West University Parks Fund

A non-profit, "501(c)(3)" corporation responsible for raising funds for City of West University Place parks.

  • Up to 21 members
  • Meets monthly

Senior Services Board

Responsible for studying the needs of senior citizens, assisting with service studies and plan development and making recommendations to the City Council on senior citizen programs.

  • Fifteen members
  • Meets the second Thursday of each month at 2:00 p.m.

Recycling and Solid Waste Reduction Board

Serving in an advisory capacity to the City Council and to reduce solid waste in our community. Responsibilities include studies and recommendations of recycling and solid waste and community education relating to recycling and solid waste.

  • Eleven members
  • Meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m.
