[ARCHIVED] WUPD-Beware of Mailbox Fishing

The U.S. Postal Inspectors along with WUPD are investigating five check fraud cases, within this month, which appear to be linked to a common scam referred to as Mailbox Fishing. The suspects have been targeting the USPS exterior collection boxes located in the 5200 block of Wakeforest and in the 5300 block of Academy throughout the night hours. Mailbox fishing happens when suspects steal outgoing mail from U.S. Postal Service blue drop boxes before it can be picked up. Although most suspects are just desperate for quick cash, organized crime groups use stolen mail to collect enough information about you to build a profile. They’ll at least know your name and address – but bank accounts, credit cards, health insurance, and other personal identifying information, can also be divulged. Whether used for creating a synthetic identity, or perpetrating medical identity theft,  credit card fraud, or even child identity theft, now is the time to get ahead of these fraudsters by following these tips:

  • Drop mail containing checks directly at the post office or hand it directly to your mail carrier
  • Consider transferring money via other methods
  • Use a pen with pigmented ink that cannot be erased
  • If you use a mailbox, deposit the mail as close to the schedule pick-up time as possible
  • If you see any suspicious activity around mailboxes call the police immediately
