West U Update - Changes to Some City Services

West U Update – Changes to Some City Services

In response to Governor Abbott’s Executive Order GA-18 on Monday April 27, 2020, the City will be making some adjustments to the services and facilities.

Please keep in mind that while Governor Abbott’s order plans for the phased reopening for all businesses in the state of Texas, doesn’t mean COVID-19 is gone, just means that the Stay Home – Work Safe, social distancing, wearing face coverings and practicing good hygiene have worked to flatten the curve and minimize the communal spread of the virus.

REMINDER

Let’s not let all of the sacrifices made by those who have been out of work for the last 5 weeks and for that hopefully can go back to work on May 18, if not sooner.  Please continue to practice good hygiene, wearing face coverings in public, minimizing unnecessary travel and social distancing at all times to help prevent the communal spread of the virus.

INITIAL CHANGES TO CITY SERVICES & FACILITIES

The City will be planning for a phased opening of facilities and programming, which will continue to expand through the month of May.  Our goal is to be back to a sense of normalcy by June 1, when it comes to services in a post COVID-19 world.

In compliance with the Governor’s order, beginning Friday May 1, 2020 the following services resume:

  • All construction related activity allowed
    • Previously the City was only processing permits for essential construction activity, which is now expanded to include all construction.
  • Tennis courts will reopen
    • Subject to a maximum of four players per court and no additional spectators waiting on the side of the court.  Please visit the Parks & Recreation website at www.westutx.gov/tennis for rules and reservations.

The rest of this update will focus on parks.  Another update will be sent out on Thursday (4/30) regarding the remaining City operations and services.

NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS & GREEN SPACE – What is Open and What is Not?

What is Open:

  • Colonial Park Open Space (east end of park)
  • West U Recreation Center Field & Track
  • Tennis Courts
  • Restrooms at Colonial Park & Recreation Center that are accessible from the outside (Buildings are still closed)

Visitors must practice social distancing with people outside of your household.

What is Not:

  • The following neighborhood parks and facilities are not being reopened at this time:
    • Judson Park
    • Weir Park
    • Whitt Johnson Park
    • Huffington Park
    • Colonial Park – Playground (east end open space is open)
    • Jennie Elizabeth Hughes Park
    • Friends Park
    • Liberty Hill Park
  • Basketball Courts
  • Swimming Pools

We understand there are many who would like these parks to reopen as soon as possible and we agree, but out of abundance of caution we will not be opening up these parks at this time.  The COVID-19 virus can live on surfaces for days and infect park users and most of our parks have an abundance of play features and amenities where the virus can live.

Pending positive monitoring results in the next 1 – 2 weeks, there is a possibility that these parks could reopen sooner, since they have less features and amenities.

  • Jennie Elizabeth Hughes Park
  • Friends Park
  • Liberty Hill Park

PARKS & RECREATION PROGRAMMING AND POOLS

  • Recreation Programming Restarting
    • More information will be coming out during the month of May on recreational programming over the summer.
    • Parks & Recreation is currently registering for summer programming that would typically start in early June.  Visit www.westutx.gov/parks for more information.
  • Swimming Pools
    • More information will be coming out during the month of May regarding the opening of pools.
