[ARCHIVED] Colonial Park West End Redevelopment Project Completed

The west end redevelopment of Colonial Park has been completed making the greenspace available year -round. This improvement is the first completed item from the newly adopted Parks Master Plan. PGAL, the architecture firm that designed the Colonial Park Pool, pool house and tennis court redevelopment, designed the area with citizen input to optimize the use of the space and ensure the architectural integrity tied in with the existing facility.

Project highlights include the construction of a 3500 sq. ft. wooden deck with built in tables and benches, providing seating for approximately 200 people; an eco-grass paver walkway, barbecue grilling area for two, dual water fountain, picnic tables, LED deck lighting, and a 600 sq. ft. shade structure with built-in in tables on the northwest end of the pool deck.

Assistant Parks and Recreation Director and Project Manager Susan White explained, “What makes this project so special is that the addition of limestone columns and aluminum fencing separates the pool area from the deck areas on the west end allowing for year-round use of the enhanced area.“

Urban Forester Craig Koehl explains that the new deck is one of the best things that could be done for the old growth live oak trees that make this outdoor space so enjoyable. According to Koehl, “The new deck will stop further root compaction and help prolong the life of the trees.”

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held May 11, with approximately 100 participants in attendance. The redevelopment project was completely funded through the generosity of the Friends of West University Place Parks Fund, Inc.
