Recycling & Composting Learning Opportunities

The program will be held on Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p. m., beginning February 1 and ending March 21st, and will include an optional field trip. Classes will be held at the West University Place Recreation Center, 4210 Bellaire Blvd. Participants who complete certain requirements will receive a Master Recycler Certificate.

Three of the eight courses offered are free to the public.

  • Curbside Composting
    • 2-hour workshop on the Do's & Don'ts of curbside recycling
    • February 8, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
  • Backyard Composting Class
    • 2-hour workshop on the how, what, when, where and who of backyard composting.
    • Thursday, February 29 5:30 p.m.  – 7:30 p.m.
  • Recycling Beyond Curbside
    • This 2-hour workshop is focused on local recycling options for items that cannot be recycled curbside.
    • Thursday, February 22 5:30 p.m.  - 7:30 p.m.

Based on similar successful Master Recycler/Composter programs that have taken place in several states, the course covers a wide range of topics from the origins of landfills, the roll of waste pickers, area curbside recycling guidelines, recycling beyond curbside, backyard composting, vermiculture, waste reduction, sustainability, the circular economy, and recycling away from home.

The Master Recycler Course will not only provide you with a multitude of resources when recycling in the Houston area, but will prepare you to engage with others, answer questions, initiate recycling efforts and inspire others to reduce, reuse and recycle. To earn your Master Recycler Certificate, you will be required to spend twenty hours volunteering as a recycling ambassador, either with a project of your creation or one of the many opportunities suggested in the course.

Registration is open now at a cost of $35 for West U residents and $45 for non-residents. This fee will cover a course T-shirt, badge, and refreshments. For more information, questions, or to register, email
