Wier Park Improvement Project

Wier Park Improvements

1/31/24: At its January 22 regular meeting, the West University Place City Council approved the bid to enter into a formal agreement with Jerdon Enterprises, L.P. for construction services for the Wier Park improvement project. In addition, City Council approved the Friends of West U Parks Fund, Inc., (Friends), funding expenditure, required by ordinance, to not exceed $910,000.

The project will begin on February 12 and is to be completed by May 31. Starting on February 12, the park will not be accessible until the project is completed. The tennis courts are the only amenity that will remain open, until the end of the project when they are slated to be worked on. Tennis courts will be accessible via the service road.

These renovations were made possible through the generosity of Friends. Through their philanthropic events, the Friends have raised enough funds to cover the entire cost of this project. Thanks to their unwavering support, West U taxpayers have been alleviated of funding this project.

The Friends of West University Parks Fund, (Friends) is a volunteer based 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising funds for development and improvement of parks and green spaces in the City of West University Place.  Visit for more information on Friends and all of the wonderful initiatives they have for West U’s parks.

1/17/24: On September 25, 2023, the West U City Council approved the Friends of West University Parks Fund, Inc. (Friends), expenditure of $75,000 to Burditt Consultants. Construction documents were prepared, and the project was formally bid.  The City received a total of nine (9) bids.  Based on bid submissions, the consultants and staff recommend the City select the second lowest bidder, Jerdon Enterprises, LLC, as their experience is the most commensurate for this project.

At its January 10 meeting, the Friends Board unanimously approved an amount not to exceed $910,000 to fund the construction expenditures consistent with City Council approval.  City staff will be overseeing some direct project costs including painting the playground equipment, replacing play panels, and resurfacing sports courts.

At the January 22 City Council meeting, the Parks and Recreation Department will request the Council to award the construction contract, approve Friends’ funding expenditures, and grant zoning regulation variances.
