While the temperatures continue to drop, the City is still hard at work ensuring West U is prepared to weather the storm! A chance of rain showers, freezing rain, and sleet are anticipated tonight. Fridays forecast is anticipated to stay in the freezing temperature range with stronger winds bringing the feel like temperature into the 20s.
City Services: To ensure the safety of staff and residents, City facilities will have a delayed start on Friday. This includes the Recreation Center and Community Building. Facilities will open to the public starting at 10:00 a.m. Classes and programs scheduled prior to the delayed start time have been cancelled.
Trash, recycling, and yard waste for Friday is scheduled to be collected per normal schedule. Please note, for the safety of our crews, the routes will also be delayed starting at 10:00 a.m.
Water: The City’s Water Distribution and Wastewater systems are operating normally. Emergency generators are on stand-by should there be a loss of power.
The City encourages residents to take the following safety precautions:
Irrigation Systems: A simple precaution can prevent costly repairs and wasting of water! Residents should turn off their irrigation systems at the backflow preventer and make sure any exposed pipes are insulated, including the “bell”. See image below. Also, don’t forget to turn off your sprinkler system at the control panel. Remember that the irrigation system is the responsibility of the property owner and the City cannot work on this system. Damage sustained to an irrigation system will need to be serviced by your irrigation service provider.
Main Water Valves: It’s extremely important to know how and where to turn off the main water valve to your home, especially during emergency situations. The main shut off valve varies in shape, see image below. It is located near the main water pipe leading into your home usually found on the side of the house. Dependent on valve type, to shut off the valve, turn it clockwise or turn perpendicular to pipe. This will cut off all water flowing into your home. Should the main shut off valve be inoperable, the water will need to be shut off at the meter.
While this may sound quick and simple, residents and their families are encouraged to locate their main water valve and learn how to turn it off before emergency strikes.

- If using a fire place, ensure the flute is open and venting properly.
- Ensure your Carbon Monoxide Detector is working.
- Never leave a space heater unattended.
2/2/2022 10:00 A.M.: The City of West University Place is expected to be impacted by the cold front passing through Texas. Temperatures Thursday night will dip into the low to mid 20s for most of the area with near freezing temperatures reaching all the way to the barrier islands. Hard Freeze Warnings are likely for the majority of the area. Winds will be gusting to 25mph Thursday evening through Friday morning leading to wind chill values down into the single digits north of Brenham with teens everywhere else. Conditions will be similar Friday night, though wind chill values may be around five degrees warmer as the winds weaken. While cold, this is not comparable to the Winter event last February in either strength or duration.
