WUPD- Speed Reduction installation begins this week

Update 11/1/21: 

The West University Place Speed Reduction Project begins this week. Crews will be installing over 100 new 25 mph speed limit signs thought out the city over the coming weeks. The public is advised to pay attention to the speed limit signage as enforcement is subject to begin in the areas where signage is posted.

Changes to the speed limit comes after a Citywide Speed and Traffic Study completed in 2020. After a series of public workshops, City Council approved moving forward with the traffic engineer’s recommendation of reducing the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph on most local streets within City limits (exemption of park and school zones which will remain at 20 mph, Buffalo Speedway, which will remain at 30 mph and the 4100-4200 blocks of Bissonnet which will remain at 35 mph). Enforcement city wide is expected to begin this winter upon completion of the project.  For more information visit, www.westutx.gov/speedlimit.

10/18/21 -The City of West University Place Speed Reduction Project officially kicks off in November. Residents will begin to see the installation of over one hundred new poles and additional signage throughout the city.  The new poles and signs will reflect the new speed limit of 25 mph from the original limit of 30 mph. Majority of City streets will be effected with only a few exceptions. Theses exceptions include the areas surrounding City parks and school zones which will remain at 20 mph. In addition, Buffalo Speedway will stay at 30 mph and the 4100-4200 block of Bissonnet will remain at 35 mph.  The public is advised to pay attention to the speed limit signage as enforcement is subject to begin in the areas where signage is posted. City wide enforcement is expected this winter upon the completion of the installment process.

Approved by City Council at its May 10 meeting, the new ordinance was adopted on the basis of the Citywide Speed and Traffic Study. The study was commissioned in February 2020 to assess existing speed limits in West U, gather data for recommendations, and identify areas for safety enhancements.

The City is planning an extensive education campaign over the coming months to inform West U residents and surrounding neighbors of the speed limit change.
