FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Recycle Board Helps West U Little League Up Their Recycling Game

The West U Little League (WULL) Fields at West U Elementary School have new trash and recycling bins this year. The West U Recycling and Solid Waste Reduction Board applied for and received a grant from the Houston Galveston Area Council (HGAC) that allowed the purchase of the bins to increase recycling and eliminate contamination.

For the past several years, the contamination level at the Little League ball field recycle bins has been high, which results in 70-80% of the recyclable material becoming trash.  It is estimated that approximately 40,000 drink containers and/or recyclable cups move through the Little League concession stand (The Dugout) each season.

WULL has teamed with the city’s Recycling & Solid Waste Reduction Board (RSWRB) to attend team meetings to educate parents and players about the proper usage of the new bins with the focus of increasing recycling. The new initiative urges all players and their parents to sign a pledge to recycle at the field, reduce their waste by bringing a reusable drink container, and to recycle their used equipment and uniforms at the end of the season. Players are also encouraged to label their belongings to prevent loss and the need to make additional purchases.

The RSWRB will host a booth at the upcoming West U Little League (WULL) Carnival on Saturday, March 2. The booth will have games that educate children about trash and recycling at the field and in our community. Board members will be available to answer questions and players and parents can sign the pledge to recycle at the ball field. Teams with the highest percentage of signed pledges will be eligible to win a prize. Children who play the games will receive a “Dugout Buck” (worth 50 cents) to use at The Dugout during WULL games. Also, Dugout Bucks will be given to players “caught” recycling “right” or using their reusable drink container with their name on it.

An additional opportunity to sign and submit pledges to recycle at the field will be provided on picture day, Sunday, March 3, at West U Elementary School MPR/Cafeteria between 11:45 an-3:45 pm.   Picture day is the deadline for teams to be eligible to win a prize.

What can you do to help?

•    Don’t put plastic containers in the recycling bin if the number “6” is indicated on the bottom of the container.

•    Containers should be emptied of liquids before placing them in the recycling bins and have the tops put back on before placing them in the recycle bins.

•    Practice the 3 R’s – REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE.
