Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a police officer? The West University Place Citizen Police Academy is your opportunity to step into the world of law enforcement and experience what officers do every day. This 8-week, interactive program offers hands-on training, behind-the-scenes access, and a deeper understanding of how the West University Place Police Department serves the community.

When: Thursday nights, 6 PM – 8:30 PM

What You’ll Experience

Throughout the Citizen Police Academy, you’ll engage in exciting, real-world police training led by experienced officers. Each session covers key areas of law enforcement, including:

• Patrol Tactics – Learn how officers respond to calls, conduct traffic stops, and handle emergencies.
• 911 Dispatch & Communications – Step inside the 911 center and see how emergency calls are handled.
• Building Searches – Experience the precision and tactics used in securing a building.
• Investigations – Dive into the world of detective work and crime-solving.
• Use of Force – Gain insight into the decision-making process behind when and how force is used in law enforcement.
• DWI Investigations – Learn how officers conduct field sobriety tests and enforce impaired driving laws.
• And More!

This is not just a classroom course—you’ll get to participate in hands-on scenarios, real police demonstrations, and interactive experiences that will give you a new perspective on policing.

Who Can Join?

The Citizen Police Academy is open to community members who are interested in learning more about local law enforcement. Applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Live or work in West University Place
• Pass a background check

This program is completely free, but space is limited to 12 participants, so don’t wait to apply!

How to Apply (FULL) 

Participation in the Citizen Police Academy is contingent upon a successful background check.  As the class start date approaches, you will be contacted in the order of application received.  

NOTE: The West University Place Citizens Police Academy is not a TCOLE licensing academy and WILL NOT certify attendees as law enforcement officers.
